School Bus Safety
Stance/Position
GO Riteway’s position on safety is that we do not compromise anything for safety. We make every effort to be on time, but we’d rather be a few minutes late than to be unsafe. We begin with a through vetting of applicant drivers, and once they pass background, drug screen, and medical requirements, they are entered into an extensive training program overseen by the safety department. The training program is not time based, it is performance based, meaning that the new driver must demonstrate skills and proficiency prior to graduating to solo operation. Training does not stop once a driver has completed initial training. Drivers are required to be in either monthly or quarterly training (depending on what division they drive for). Those trainings are safety-based, and will also include operational matters as well. Remedial training is required whenever a driver falls below our expected standard.
GO Riteway’s management of drivers is extensive. We commit time and resources to making sure our drivers are operating in a safe and professional manner, and providing the best customer service. We accomplish this through a variety of methods. Cameras are installed on a variety of vehicles, and are randomly reviewed for driver performance. Supervisors and managers carry Road Observation booklets in their cars, and anytime they observe a GO Riteway vehicle, they complete a report, which is forwarded to the driver’s supervisor and reviewed with the driver. Many of our vehicles have a telematics device that reports live GPS data, speed, braking, and other information that is reviewed. All information is shared with the drivers, both positive and negative. Negative behavior is noted and expected not to be repeated, and some will lead to disciplinary measures. Drivers receiving positive feedback are often rewarded in some form or fashion, with something like a candy bar, an additional entry into a drawing, or some type of GO Riteway clothing.
School Bus Safety
Commitment to Safety
GO Riteway’s commitment to safety is far above industry standard and best practices. Our safety team consists of 8 dedicated safety professionals spread out over five locations. The safety team oversees training and compliance with regulations. Our past audits conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Department of Defense, Transportation Safety Exchange, and insurance providers have yielded the highest scores possible. Two of GO Riteway’s safety team sit on the Bus Industry Safety Council with the American Bus Association, as well as the Wisconsin Council of Safety Supervisors.
The safety team has produced safety incentive programs to promote safe driving within all ranks of drivers. The school bus division has a Crash Prevention Program which is a competition between terminals. The Commercial Services Division provides competition among the drivers with a Driver of the Month/Year program, along with various other activities to promote safety throughout the year.
Ongoing training occurs on an annual basis for all management, mechanics, trainers, and staff with respect to promoting safety in operations. The safety team takes part in at least four off site safety seminars on an annual basis, and is able to stay current on changing regulations and best practices. The safety team is also tasked with presenting at those national events.
